What I know about boats, you could fit into a salty drop of H2O.

That minor detail didn’t stop me from developing the concept and writing the script for this animated TVC for the Boating Industry Association’s annual boat show.

As we were working with a modest budget, it was clear from the outset that it was going to be a VO driven spot.

That being the case, I wanted to inject some colloquial charm, so penned some choice phrases that would really resonate with the blokey demographic. “Tarted up tinnies”,  being a pertinent example – and possibly the best thing that I’ve ever written.

While the typography for the event’s logo was already set, I added the hook and life-ring elements to it, and also designed the wavy treatment of the graphic elements that come together in the end frame.

It was also great fun seeing the script come to life in the hokey little animation.

BIA – Melbourne Boat Show

VIDEO:

We open on an animated view of Port Phillip Bay looking back towards the Melbourne city skyline. In the mid-ground a speedboat with a paraglider flies in from screen left while a motorised rubber dingy tootles by, coming in from screen right. A buoy bobs up and down in the water.

At this year’s Melbourne Boat Show …

VIDEO:

A small wooden boat comes in from screen left but is quickly overtaken by a person on a jet ski who whizzes past him.

VO:

… we’ve got everything that could possibly float your boat.

VIDEO:

A souped up motor boat chugs in from screen right while a tarted up tinny floats into view from screen left.

VO:

From souped up motor boats, to tarted up tinnies…

VIDEO:

A brightly coloured orange fish dives out of the water as the hull of a fishing boat floats into view in the foreground.

VO:

… and everything inbetween.

VIDEO:

A fishing line is cast and splashes through the water’s surface as the camera also plunges downwards to the seaweed swaying on the ocean’s floor.

VO:

It’s all at the Melbourne Boat Show.

VIDEO:

The orange fish swims towards and then darts away from the hook as an anchor is dropped in the background.

VO:

Queen’s birthday weekend.

VIDEO:

The animation blurs as the hook is quickly yanked back up to the surface revealing the Melbourne Boat Show logo with the real fishing hook and life ring ‘O’. Aqua and white wavy blocks animate across the bottom of the screen for the information to appear on.

Thursday 9 to Monday 13 June, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
