This was one of those projects where I literally went to town in a bid to make it as authentic as possible.
Visiting the boutique vintage poster stores in High Street, Armadale, I photographed close-up blocks of the vibrant inked textures that distinguish so many of the iconic posters of yesteryear.
I then used these photographed textures to inject ‘ye-olde’ character into the new poster design. I also reproduced one of the key characteristics of vintage screen-printing by digitally mis-registering the colour plates.
This all locked in perfectly with the idea of a school fete, which at its essence seemed to harken back to a time of joyful innocence.
Similarly, I loosely based the ringmaster character on the naive cartoon character styles of the early twentieth century.
The catchcry to “Be Amused. Be Amazed. Be Astounded”, is a cheeky play on the “Bialik. Be Your Best” positioning that I devised for the college a few years earlier.
The poster also takes advantage of vintage wood type ornaments and period fonts.
