This is the first real ‘jingle’ that I ever created for a TVC.
Composed with long time collaborator and creative comrade, Michael Burrows – this was created for a conference centre in Canberra called Exhibition Park.
The 3D animation was done by a local animation group called Momentum Animation.
There are two things in particular that distinguished this project;
The first was that from a recording point of view, I hadn’t yet mastered MIDI which is the electronic language that allows synthesizers to speak to each other and to the computer. The significance of this is that every single instrument that you can hear in this track was being recorded as audio in much the same way that you might record a bass guitar or a vocalist. The advantage of MIDI of course is that you can correct or transpose musical passages after the recording is done. In fact you can even correct (or quantise) the timing if you didn’t play it accurately enough in the first place. The point being, everything you hear, including the very fast orchestral string passages, had to be played by hand, perfectly in time, as I didn’t yet know how to do it any other way.
The second thing that distinguished this project was that I was living in a one bedroom apartment in Alma Rd, East St. Kilda at the time and my ‘recording studio’ was set up in my bedroom. While nothing about this arrangement had bothered me until this point; the animators wanted to have a meeting with us at our end.
What followed would have been hilarious had it not been so humiliating and awkward.
In short, the meeting attendees included not only the animators, but myself, Mikey and the client’s representatives. So there they all were, sitting on my bed, none of us really knowing where to look, as I talked them through the piece.
Right then and there I vowed to never have that kind of situation recur and to this day absolutely relish the luxury of having a dedicated studio space.
