Some things take time. A whole lot of grass-growing, paint-drying kind of time.
And after eleven years of development, Shalom Bollywood was finally released in October 2017 at the Jewish International Film Festival in Melbourne.
Directed by multi-award winning documentary film maker, Danny Ben-Moshe, this feature length doco explores the history of Indian cinema and the untold story of the Jewish actors, writers and directors who played such a critical role in the evolution of the movie making juggernaut that we now know as Bollywood.
I first met Danny in my early twenties when he was living across the road from my grandparent’s home in Caulfield. He was all too frequently exposed to the cacophony of my band rehearsals that would drift across the street and into his home.
Even back then he’d picked me as someone that he was keen to collaborate with.
My involvement in Shalom Bollywood called for literally every skillset that I could bring to the table. From developing the key graphics, to conceptualising the key animation sequences that would later be brought to life so brilliantly by Rubberhouse, to reviewing endless script drafts, to even recording the original sitar version of Hava Nagila that was performed by Afghani sitar virtuoso, Khalil Gudaz.
Across the many years of the film’s development, Shalom Bollywood was written about extensively in a diverse spread of publications around the world. Now it has finally been launched it is now playing to great acclaim at film festivals around the world.
Included here is the screener which included many of the sequences that I worked on which subsequently appeared in the final cut. The screener was created to show to investors as part of the film’s fund raising drive.
