Created for my tongue-in-cheek song Springvale, this film clip won ‘best in show’ for the 2008 Celluloid Soup Melbourne Jewish Short Film Festival.
It was a controversial win however, as that year’s festival theme was, “It Takes Two”, which celebrated the collaborative process at the heart of film making.
Ever the rabble rouser and class clown, I made a point of submitting an entry that was decidedly a solo effort. From composing and recording the song, right through to shooting the sequences that I also appeared in – I literally did it all.
The song raised the age old question that has hung ominously over every young romance that has blossomed in Melbourne’s Jewish community.
The male suitor trying to gauge the true depth of his fledgling relationship, begs the most earnest of questions, “Could you be the girl for me, and should I buy plots in Springvale?”.
The clip brings the song’s story to life by combining original footage shot at Springvale Cemetery, together with archival family films, curated stock footage, original animation, typography and graphics.
The clip even features some dodgy outtakes of me breakdancing at my bar mitzvah reception back in 1984.
