Channeling the spirit of Rodgers and Hammerstein, The Ballad of Leon The Barber is a jaunty little ditty that brought to life the comic like pathos of Leon Danziger, a barber with stars in his eyes.
When director, Ryan Spanger first described his graduating documentary to me, I reached for the guitar in the corner of the room and The Ballad of Leon The Barber literally fell out of my face.
And while writing the song called for a certain degree of songwriting smarts, arranging it was arguably and even more critical part of making sure that it delivered on its promise.
To help me in this endeavour I drew upon the ambrosial vocal talents of Melbourne jazz chantoosie, Tamara Kuldin, the slinky double-bass genius of Simon Starr, and the hoe-down violin gymnastics of Michelle Lewitt.
Together with the twang of the Jew’s Harp, it probably made for as unlikely a musical accompaniment for a documentary that the VCA assessors had ever seen.
